HISTORY OF NASSAU ACADEMY OF MEDICINE

harvesting knowledge through further education since 1953

FOUNDING THE ACADEMY

The Nassau County Medical Society, the sister organization of the Nassau Academy of Medicine was founded in 1921. In addition to the work that the Nassau County Medical Society was doing to provide a place for the physicians in the county to unite and promote positive change, we established the Nassau Academy of Medicine in 1953. As stated in the charter of the Nassau Academy of Medicine, the Academy’s purpose was “to provide educational opportunities and training of a postgraduate nature for members of the medical profession of Nassau County, a place to establish and maintain a medical library and to diffuse among the people knowledge of the achievements of scientific medicine.” Just as the medical field is ever-evolving, we wish to implement an online database of educational resources in place of a library and renovate the ways that our members access knowledge, learn, and grow together.

PHYSICIAN IMPACT

As we have seen in the resiliency of physicians throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the ability to adapt to overcome unprecedented change and learn from others in the medical field impacts patient care and healthcare of the community, as a whole. Through promoting and administering the COVID-19 vaccine to decrease the spread of cases and save lives, we have exemplified that when we come together, we can make a true difference. In every challenge that we face, may we always remember that knowledge and collaborating with like-minded physicians ease our way to finding the best solution. While physicians continue to impact societal healthcare, the Nassau Academy of Medicine advances to meet the needs of its members and aid in their educational and fundamental development.

LIGHTING THE PATH OF GREATNESS

Undoubtedly, medical school students devote the maximum amount of effort to their studies and learning the art of medicine. However, a physician’s education does not conclude during residency and merely begins upon exiting the classroom and gaining hands-on experience. When we learn from seasoned experts through CME activities and study our colleagues’ medical journals that present new findings, we enhance not only our own education, but we can convey new information to those who work alongside us as well. The flame that kindles our passion for medicine can only take us so far, but our open-mindedness to the evolution of science and our willingness to ignite the flame through education for those who come after us contributes to lighting the path of greatness.
